Paul Simpson - Musical Director
Paul Simpson has been Musical Director of the Hurstpierpoint Singers since 2012. He divides his time between music and writing: a Music Scholar at St. Paul’s School, London, he has been a choir trainer for over 35 years, studying with Ian Curror, Jonathan Varcoe, Robert Gower and Robert Stewart. After holding church posts in Sutton, Wallington, and Walton-on-Thames in Surrey, he moved to Sussex in 1997 and was Director of Music at St. John’s, Burgess Hill for 12 years. He retired as Director of Music for Albourne, Sayers Common and Twineham Parish in summer 2014, and now deputises as organist or choir trainer at various local churches as required. He also conducts the Hassocks-based all-age community choir All The Right Notes – one of the few local choirs to operate all year round – and has conducted numerous choral societies and worked with amateur dramatic groups, starting with the centenary production of Iolanthe in 1982.
In addition to composing or arranging many sacred and secular works, he is a well-reviewed author of over 30 non-fiction books, and as editor, he freelances for various major publishers, including working across the BBC’s Doctor Who range and running the genre website www.scifibulletin.com
He lives in Hassocks with his wife Barbara, and a Jack Russell terrier who has become used to all sorts of music going on around him, as well as a Romanian refugee crossbreed who’s just starting to believe her ears!
